Shortage Occupation List To Be Updated Addressing The Construction Worker Shortage:

It has recently been announced that more roles in the construction field are to be added to the Shortage Occupation List (SOL) on 7th August 2023. This is to aid the housing industry in meeting their demands and to allow employers to address staff shortages by enabling them to recruit workers from outside the UK, provided they have a sponsor licence in place.

The Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) has welcomed the decision to add several construction roles to the shortage occupation list to tackle the shortage of workers.

The following roles will be added to the SSOL list:

  • Bricklayers and masons,
  • Roofers, tilers, and slaters
  • Carpenters and joiners
  • Construction and building trades not elsewhere classified.
  • Plasterers

What does this mean?

For employers in the construction industry, it means that they can sponsor workers from overseas provided they hold a valid sponsor licence and will be need to pay their workers a salary of 80% of the going rate.

For employees/applicants wanting to work in the UK this means lower application fees.
