UK Rolls Out Full Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) Scheme Enforcement, Affecting Millions Worldwide

The Home Office continues its drive toward a fully digital immigration system, aiming to make UK border processes quicker, more secure and more efficient for the millions of travellers entering the country each year.

From 25 February 2026, eligible visitors must hold an approved Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling. Without one, passengers will not be permitted to board their transport and cannot legally travel to the UK.

What is an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)?

An ETA is a digital permission to travel that allows visitors from eligible countries to pre‑authorise their journey to the UK. It does not grant entry, immigration checks still take place on arrival. Instead, it authorises an individual to board transport to the UK.

Visitors will need an ETA if they:

  • do not require a visa for short stays of up to six months, and
  • do not already hold a UK immigration status.

How to Apply for an ETA

The quickest way to apply is through the UK ETA app, available on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Travellers without a smartphone can apply online via GOV.UK.

Most applicants receive a decision within three working days, though decisions may come faster for those applying through the app.

To apply, travellers must:

  • pay the application fee
  • provide contact and passport details
  • upload a compliant digital photo
  • answer a series of questions

Applicants must travel using the same passport used in their ETA application.

How Much Does an ETA Cost?

An ETA currently costs £16 and is valid for multiple entries over two years, or until the traveller’s passport expires, whichever is sooner.

Who Does Not Need an ETA?

You do not need an ETA if any of the following apply:
