Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA)

The launch of the new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme also dubbed the U.K ESTA

In the recent Statement of Changes published by the on 9th March 2023, the Home Office have announced they will be launching the new Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) scheme in October 2023. This scheme is also dubbed the U.K ESTA which is similar to the U.S ESTA process.

What is an ETA?

An ETA is an application for digital permission to travel to the UK.  This is a new requirement for people who do not need a visa to come to the UK. This will be electronically linked to your passport.

Who will this apply to?

It will be required by all non-visa nationals meaning those who do not require a visa to visit the UK, (except British and Irish citizens).  To come to the UK for up to six months as a visitor, including transit visitors and some creative workers.

This applies to Adults and Children. Separate applications will need to be made. 

When will this be required?

From 15 November 2023, non-visa nationals (except British and Irish nationals) will need an ETA if travelling to the UK and are a national of Qatar.

From 22 February 2024, non-visa nationals (except British and Irish nationals) will need an ETA if travelling to the UK and are a national of:

  • Bahrain
  • Jordan
  • Kuwait
  • Oman
  • Saudi Arabia
  • United Arab Emirates

More countries will be added to the scheme later including EU countries

How long will the ETA be valid for?

ETAs will last for two years and can be used to make multiple visits to the UK.

How will this work?

This will work either through the UK ETA app, or online on GOV.UK, decisions on these applications will be made within 3 working days, or it may take longer than 3 working days if the Home Office need to make further checks

What happens the ETA is refused?

If your application for ETA is refused, then you will need to apply for a visa.

How much will the ETA Cost?

The costs have not yet been determined
