17th May 2025 marks an important day in the global fight for equality, recognition, and respect for the LGBTQ+ community—the International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia (IDAHOBIT).

As a leading firm in Portsmouth, Hampshire and the South, it is vital to us here at Biscoes that we stand in solidarity with our clients, colleagues, and communities to create an environment of inclusivity, safety, and respect for all individuals, regardless of their gender identity, sexual orientation, or expression.

A Day of Reflection and Action

IDAHOBIT was first established in 2004, serving as a platform to raise awareness about the ongoing challenges faced by LGBTQ+ individuals worldwide. The date was chosen to commemorate the World Health Organisation's decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental disorders in 1990, only 35 years ago.

Since then, this day has grown into a global movement, with organisations, advocacy groups, and individuals coming together to denounce discrimination, violence, and stigma faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

For us at Biscoes, IDAHOBIT is not just a day of reflection but an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. It encourages us to examine the role that legal professionals play in both challenging and upholding societal norms, laws, and policies that affect the LGBTQ+ community.  This is particularly pertinent, given the role of Biscoes as a main sponsor of Portsmouth Pride 2025, incorporating UK Pride.

Legal Rights and Protections for LGBTQ+ Individuals

While significant progress has been made in recent years, LGBTQ+ individuals still face numerous legal and social challenges. These include:

  1. Discrimination in the Workplace: Despite anti-discrimination laws in many countries, LGBTQ+ employees continue to experience unfair treatment, harassment, and unequal opportunities based on their sexual orientation or gender identity. As solicitors, we advocate for the rights of individuals to be free from such discrimination and support them in taking legal action where necessary.  If you have experienced discrimination in the workplace, please contact our employment specialist, Stuart Seagrove at SSeagrove@biscoes-law.co.uk
  2. Access to Healthcare: Transgender and non-binary individuals, in particular, often face barriers when it comes to accessing healthcare that meets their specific needs. Legal professionals can assist in ensuring that these individuals receive appropriate care and fight against any institutional practices that perpetuate discrimination in healthcare settings.  If you have any questions about this issue, please feel free to contact our civil litigation team, on 02392 660261.
  3. Same-Sex Marriage and Parental Rights: Although same-sex marriage has been legalized in many parts of the world, there are still regions where LGBTQ+ couples face legal hurdles. Furthermore, issues related to adoption, parental rights, and inheritance laws continue to require legal support to ensure equality for same-sex couples and their families.  We have a specialist in surrogacy and fertility issues in our Family Team.  If you need more information about this issue, please contact Stephanie Bellchambers on SBellchambers@biscoes-law.co.uk and be sure to attend the LGBTQ+ Routes to Parenthood: An Evening of Expert Insights & Shared Experiences hosted by Biscoes together with Engendering Change, The Parenting Network and Portsmouth Pride, on 3rd June 2025 from 5.30 PM until 7.30 PM at The Forge, 83 Fratton Road, PO1 5AG.  It’s free to attend and you can get tickets here LGBTQ+ Routes to Parenting Tickets, Tue, Jun 3, 2025 at 5:30 PM Eventbrite.
  4. Hate Crimes and Violence: Sadly, members of the LGBTQ+ community are often targets of hate crimes and violence. Solicitors play an important role in providing legal protection to victims, guiding them through the legal process and helping them obtain justice.

The Role of Solicitors in Promoting Equality

As legal professionals, we at Biscoes take our responsibility to ensure that our work environment, policies, and practices reflect a commitment to inclusion and respect for all clients very seriously. Here are several ways in which we are taking action, on IDAHOBIT and beyond:

  1. Foster an Inclusive Workplace Culture: This begins with education and awareness. We are committed to conducting training on LGBTQ+ issues, ensuring that all staff members are equipped to provide respectful and competent service to clients of all identities. This includes recognising and addressing any conscious or unconscious biases, microaggressions, or discriminatory behaviour in the workplace.
  2. Champion LGBTQ+ Rights in the Legal System: We can advocate for stronger protections for LGBTQ+ individuals, both in the courts and within the law itself. We can be and are active participants in legal reform that helps dismantle outdated policies that harm marginalised communities, including those who are LGBTQ+.
  3. Provide Legal Services including Legal Aid: Many LGBTQ+ individuals, especially those from disadvantaged backgrounds, face financial barriers when seeking legal assistance. Being a provider of legal aid to those in need can be a way to make a significant impact in ensuring access to justice.
  4. Support LGBTQ+ Advocacy Groups and Initiatives: We are committed to partnering with LGBTQ+ advocacy groups, supporting initiatives that combat homophobia, biphobia and transphobia, and engaging in pro-LGBTQ+ campaigns. Being vocal in supporting these groups helps foster a more inclusive society where everyone’s rights are respected.

Moving Forward: A Commitment to Equality

While significant strides have been made in advancing LGBTQ+ rights globally, it is clear that the fight is far from over. As solicitors, we recognise that we are uniquely positioned to help challenge discriminatory practices, provide legal guidance, and advocate for the dignity and respect that every individual deserves. By standing together on IDAHOBIT, we send a powerful message of solidarity and support for the LGBTQ+ community.

As a large and respected local solicitors’ firm, we understand that our actions matter, and our commitment to fostering an inclusive, respectful, and fair environment must extend beyond the courtroom. By supporting the LGBTQ+ community, we aim to contribute to a society where every person, regardless of their identity, can live free from discrimination, violence, and fear.

This International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, and Biphobia, let us renew our commitment to the fight for equality, justice, and the protection of human rights for all.

Join the conversation: In readiness for Portsmouth Pride 2025, we encourage our clients, colleagues, and friends to engage in meaningful conversations about LGBTQ+ rights and how we can all contribute to a more inclusive society. Share your thoughts, experiences, and actions on social media using the hashtag #EqualityAdvocates. Let’s stand together against homophobia, transphobia, and biphobia.
