A Notary is the holder of a public office whose duty is to substantiate or create evidence of the public's activities. Notaries originated as scribes who took notes or minutes of important events and decisions and recorded them as public or private documents.
Once a document has been attested by a Notary, it should have the force of a court judgement and be accepted throughout most of the world without formal verification.
It is often a requirement that contracts and deeds for the purchase of properties in the USA or elsewhere abroad should be notarised.
In addition, Notaries are empowered to draft contracts and carry out conveyancing work, probate, wills, and most other non-contentious matters, and will often be able to act for both parties to a transaction.
