HSE Publishes Injury and Ill-Health Statistics

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has recently published statistics on workplace injury and illness for the year 2013/14.

The figures show that an estimated 28.2 million working days were lost as a result of injury and sickness over the year, at a total cost of £14.2 billion.

There were 133 fatal injuries in 2013/14, compared with 150 the previous year. A further 77,593 injuries (a rate of 304.6 per 100,000 employees) were reported under the Reporting of Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations 2013 (RIDDOR).

Two million people suffered during the year from an illness they believe was caused or exacerbated by current or previous employment. This number includes 500,000 people who developed new conditions during the year.

There have been no significant changes to the industries in which workers are most likely to sustain injuries, which include construction, waste and recycling, agriculture and manufacturing.
